-The USS "Harriet Lane", named for ex-President Buchanan's niece, was captured by the Confederate Navy during
the war. After sinking the Confederate packet vessel "Neptune" she was surrendered in Galveston Harbor, Texas after
all her chief officers had been killed in the battle. -The great American composer and songwriter Stephen Foster
["Oh Susanna", "Old Folks At Home"] often stayed in Lancaster. His sister was married to the brother
of James Buchanan, the Reverend Thomas Y. Buchanan. Their home was at what is now The Revere Tavern. -The Earl Infantry
Band as it was known in 1856, was reorganized in 1864 and became the regimental band for the 203rd Pennsylvania Volunteer
Infantry. Today it is the famous New Holland Concert Band. -The Reynolds family were direct decedents of Marie Ferree,
the early French Huguenot pioneer. *Confederate General John Imboden's parents were from Lancaster County.
*1200 men from Lancaster gave their lives in the war. President Lincoln's first Secretary of War was born
