Frederick H. Dyer was fourteen years old when he joined up with the 7th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry as a drummer boy. He served out his term and was mustered out with the rest of the regiment on July 20, 1865. He was a member of G.A.R. Post # 120 [W .F. Templeton] in Washington, Pa. He also served as Pennsylvania Department Commander.
Nearly four decades after the war, in 1903, Dyer began the task of his life, the written histories of all of the Union Regiments from the war. Working in almost solitary confinement, he poured over the Official Records of the Rebellion compiled by the government after the war. He also interviewed and corresponded with thousands of veterans. Five years later in 1908, he emerged with what is still to this day the most complete and easily used record of the Union Army. Frederick Dyer died on September 21, 1921 and is buried in Boston, Massachusetts.
